![]() I approach Topaz Mask AI as mostly a landscape photographer. For portrait and wedding photographers, it's going to be even more useful. You can drag over an object and Photoshop selects it for you, using some sophisticated object and edge detection algorithms. There are two variations: rectangle and lasso. Adobe added an Object Selection tool in Photoshop 2020. On the other hand, Mask AI moves the state of the art forward in terms of making the tedious task of masking easier, Topaz has given us some very smart tools, and they certainly will speed up your workflow. Trees and other details will often trick the AI and require more adjustment. The upcoming Luminar 4 simply blows away any other product that offers sky replacement, because it generally figures out where the sky is regardless of how complex the foreground. If you are simply separating a mountain range from a sky background, Mask AI works perfectly. Replacing a sky if there are trees or detailed objects is generally not automatic, although the AI does help cut your time down. As mentioned, Topaz Mask AI also uses a paint bucket tool to quickly define large portions of an image, and the bucket can be configured to cut, keep, or compute an area, same as the brush tool.įor operations like sky replacement, the use of the AI term is not a good fit. ![]() ![]() They can be changed in size and are pretty good at edge detection, which is the heart of the smart masking process. The AI is built into the brushes Topaz uses to define objects. There is an on-screen percentage counter to tell you how it is doing. Speed on my MacBook Pro was fine, and of course, there are both Mac and Windows versions of this app. There are small delays as the computation takes place, but I never felt the need to read a web page or get some coffee while it was working. On portraits with wispy hair, Luminar has no solution, and Topaz Mask AI did a very credible job. The AI was an advantage, because even while I roughly outlined people in a photo, the AI could usually figure out the difference between the subject and the background. On non-sky replacement tasks, Mask AI was able to best Photoshop and Luminar. Still, the masking most of us want to do is not just sky replacement. There are a couple of sliders for fine adjustments, but in this example, they were not needed. Frankly, Topaz Mask AI could not compete there. Trying the same image with a beta copy of the upcoming Luminar 4 sky replacement was literally one click. The contrast mode is quicker, but picks up simpler objects for masking. I found AI mode works best with hair, trees, fur, and detailed objects. Topaz Mask AI also offers a method besides AI, and that's a contrast mode for object detection. Still, the more I needed to refine the mask, the less AI benefit I was getting. I found the process easier than doing something similar in Photoshop, and in most cases, the AI helped. Once you “Update Mask,” you can see a split screen preview window: the left image will preview the colored mask, and the right-side one will show the mask effect on the image after the cut with a transparent background. When I made Mask AI larger, I was all set with no more hidden buttons. Turns out, working on my laptop, I had to scroll the screen to see the button, because it was cut off my the window edge. On many images, you need to help the selection along, painting in what to keep and what to cut.Ĭontrols are pretty straightforward, but it helps to watch a tutorial or two first. In fact, when I started using the app, I could not find the button that computed the mask. In the auto mode, which is where the AI part comes in, the app will take a look at your image and make some guesses about what to mask and what to cut. There is an auto-compute mode, or you can do more manually. When you are ready, you can replace the background. ![]() The interior of an object is defined in green, and you can use the paint bucket tool to quickly fill. Once that is done, there are tools to refine the mask. Then fill the areas to be cut in red, such as a sky in my case. Outline your subject or object edges in blue with a paintbrush. Topaz Mask AI presents a fairly simple interface (with a built-in tutorial). I wanted to look at it for sky masking/replacement since I'm primarily a landscape photographer. We've already had a good preliminary look at Topaz Mask AI from our own Ryan Mense. ![]() No need to panic I tell myself, But I never felt this feeling with anybody else. Romero was taken to the Rampart police station for questioning, then took a bus to Roosevelt High the next morning. ![]() Romero said he was carrying rosary beads in his pocket and stuffed them into Kennedy's hands. Romero thought the pops were from firecrackers and that Kennedy had fallen in fright, but Romero then saw blood spilling onto his own hand and realized what had happened as Sirhan Sirhan, the man with the gun, was apprehended. He said that just as he shook Kennedy's hand, the shots were fired. The next night, after Kennedy won California's Democratic primary and made a victory speech, he retreated through the kitchen pantry area and Romero pushed through the crowd to congratulate him. He became an Ambassador busboy on the advice of his strict stepfather, who worked at the hotel and wanted Romero to be sure to stay out of trouble on the streets of East Los Angeles. "I remember walking out of that room - feeling 10 feet tall, feeling like an American", said Romero, who had moved to Los Angeles from Mexico seven years earlier. Romero told me he had met Kennedy the night before when the candidate ordered room service, and he felt honored by the way Kennedy shook his hand firmly and looked him in the eye with respect. When I met Romero in 1998, just prior to the 30th anniversary of the assassination, he fell apart in recalling the fateful night and how he happened to be in the hotel pantry area where Kennedy was shot. In our many conversations over the years, he said he often felt we were moving further politically from what he saw as a Kennedy legacy of tolerance and compassion. Romero was in the habit of leaving flowers at that monument each year to mark RFK's death. ![]() The candidate had spoken there not long before his death and told throngs of supporters that poverty and illiteracy were indecent, and he warned of "an erosion of a sense of national decency". That day, we met at a downtown San Jose park, near a monument to Kennedy. His marriage had failed many years earlier, but he said he was in regular contact with his children from that marriage, and he was giddy about a new romance with a Modesto woman. When I met with Romero in June, on the 50th anniversary of Kennedy's death, he told me he loved the hard, sweaty work of paving driveways and roads, and he had no intention of retiring. Romero had not been ill, according to Chacon. A niece and a brother confirmed Romero's death, but family members were unavailable for comment. "He had a heart attack several days ago and his brain went too long without oxygen", said his longtime friend, TV newsman Rigo Chacon of San Jose. That only made the news of Romero's death this week in Modesto, at age 68, seem all the more tragic. Finally, he said, he was able to mark his birthday after years of refusing to celebrate because it was in the same month as RFK's assassination. It was only in recent years that Romero began to let go, and in my visits with him three years ago and again this past June, he seemed to have been revived. The photos of that moment, with confusion and despair in Romero's young, dark eyes, made for searing portraits of 1960s upheaval and followed by two months the assassination of the Rev Martin Luther King Jr and by five years the assassination of RFK's brother, President John F Kennedy. This of course, led to many tears – and at one point, I actually jumped in front of Abby Cadabby and begged her to let my poor sobbing daughter just…touch…her…hand. Unfortunately, the characters can only withstand the heat for so long, and as it happened, every time it was our turn, a staff member would sadly smile and tell us that so-and-so had to go get a drink of water! With that said, we did not go to a Character Meal this time and we regretted it! Every time our kids saw a character on the street, they begged us to take a picture, and we had to stop what we were doing and get on line. There is a hot buffet, but I won't go there… But as far as the food goes…just keep in mind that you're paying a crazy anount for some boxes of dried cereal and a few bananas. They got to spend some quality time with almost all of the characters before the park opened. The first year we went down to Sesame Place, we went to breakfast with Cookie Monster and Abby Cadabby…and my kids LOVED it. Everyone has their own staunch opinions about whether these over-priced meals are worth it, so I'll just give you my two cents. We always bring an assortment of fruit, granola bars, water bottles, juice boxes, milk cups…and even their beloved gummy worms. This means that you can pack food and snacks that you know your kids will eat even when they're completely overstimulated. So, with everyone's sanity in mind, Sesame Place allows visitors to bring a soft-sided cooler into the park as long as it is no larger than 10"x10"x12". Sesame Place understands that little ones need their "special" snacks and sometimes, even an ice cream sundae served up in a bright blue Cookie Monster bowl, simply won't cut it. |
